Alice Neel Rocks

Nancy and the Twins

Went with daughter to the Alice Neel show at the Whitechapel Gallery. What a beautiful show, and what a fantastic artist. She really did get the very essence of a person and a place and a time, with just a few strokes of her brush. Now, what lesson as a writer can I draw from that?

In one of the rooms, amongst a selection of portraits of women blasted and confronted by motherhood, I found the image at the top of this post – Nancy and the Twins. It is going to be very useful for novel#2. One day I’d like to write a story peopled by her portraits. I was surprised at how moving I found the exhibition. I actually got a bit weepy. Or perhaps its the hormones. Or the slow progress this week of novel #2…

  1. I’m in the middle of endiitg the novel I wrote in NaNoWriMo last year. This is a brilliant way to get the first draft down on paper. For anyone who has been promising themselves they are going to write a novel but never quite get round to it I would defintely recommnend going for this.Linda
